=================================================== NEWSLETTER of the SUTHERLAND SHIRE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Inc. http://www.ssso.org June 2006 ================================================== THE NEXT CONCERT The second 2006 subscription series concert will be held on SUNDAY 26th JUNE 2006, 2.30 pm at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre 30 Eton Street, Sutherland Guest Conductor: Jodie Spooner-Ryan Soloist: David Greco, Baritone Tickets and Information: Sutherland Entertainment Centre (02) 9521 8888 ----------------- SYMPHONIC LEGENDS Guest conductor Jodie Spooner-Ryan has prepared a delightful program for this concert, with each item telling its own very special story. First there is Kabalevski's rousing Overture to the comic opera "Colas Breugnon", based on he story of a 16th century French woodcarver's humorous revenge on the nobles who oppressed him. This is followed by "Let Us Garlands Bring", four songs by Gerald Finzi based on texts by William Shakespeare. Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No.2 tells further stories the about Norwegian folk hero of that name Finally Dvorak's Symphony No.8, arguably one of his most programmatic and lyrical works, evokes the beautiful scenery of the composer's beloved 19th century Bohemia. All great music, not to be missed! ============================================= WELL-KNOWN GUEST CONDUCTOR Jodie Spooner-Ryan, our guest conductor at the June concert, will be well known to many of our audience as the Resident Conductor of the Sutherland Shire Choral Society. She is no stranger to our Orchestra either. In December 2003 she conducted the SSSO in a joint performance of Rutter's Gloria together with the Sutherland Shire Choral Society. Jodie graduated from the University of NSW as a Bachelor of Music/ Bachelor of Education in 1995. She then took a position of Music Teacher at St. Mary Star of the Sea College. In 2000 Jodie travelled to the United States where she completed a 2 year Master of Music Choral Conducting at Florida State University. Whilst at Florida State she was Assistant Conductor of the University Philharmonia and Musical Director of the University's production of The Music Man . Until recently Jodie was Head of Music at St. Vincent's college, Potts Point. =========================================== SPECIAL SOLOIST Having a singer as a soloist for our June concert is an unusual treat. Baritone David Greco has worked with many of Australia's finest musical ensembles. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he is a member of Cantillation and Pinchgut Opera and has appeared in their productions of Purcella's The Fairy Queen, Monteverdi's L' Orfeo and most recently in Rameau's dramatic masterpiece Dardanus. David has appeared as soloist with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has just toured with highly acclaimed early music artist Emma Kirkby as a soloist and chorister on her recent Musica Viva concerts in Australia.
